Practical Nursing – Wounds, Dressings and Sutures

Louise O'Dwyer

DMS BSc(Hons) VTS(ECC) DipAVN(Medical & Surgical) RVN

Head Nurse, PetMedics Manchester

Course Synopsis

The aim of this practical course is to give qualified veterinary nurses or second year trainees the opportunity to learn more about practical wound management techniques as nurses are becoming increasingly involved in the management of wounds in small animal practice. In order to be able to carry out this role effectively, nurses require a good understanding of the wound healing process.

Lectures will cover assessment of wounds, wound care, choice of dressing and suturing techniques. These will be complemented by case-based seminar sessions and a suturing practical, which will involve the use of synthetic materials rather than animal tissue.

Specific areas to be covered

How to assess wounds and set objectives
'Advanced' wound management principles: delayed union and second intention healing
What to do with delayed healing and chronic wounds
How to create wound management 'clinics' in practice

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
