  • This modular critical care course is aimed at veterinary nurses working in general practice or emergency clinics who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in nursing critically ill patients.
  • Each module covers a specific type of emergency situation,placing emphasis on the nurse's role in approaching the emergency patient, dealing with the initial treatment and nursing the patient through the stabilisation period.
  • Each module will have a practical focus and include genuine case studies for discussion.

 

 


 

Module One:     Nursing the Collapsed Patient

This half day course will look at the initial assessment and stabilisation period for emergency collapsed patients. It will initially focus on identification of abnormalities of the major body systems (cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological) and discuss initial stabilisation, treatment techniques and investigation for these patients.

 

Identification of major body system abnormalities

Identification and treatment of shock - including fluid therapy

Case-based discussion of management of collapsed patients

 

 


 

Module Two:     Nursing the Trauma Patient

This course will look at the nursing care involved with trauma patients, including initial management of bite wounds, road traffic accidents and neurological injury. The course will review analgesia, fluid therapy, diagnostics and therapeutic interventions as well as commonly performed procedures for trauma patients, including the placement of feeding tubes, thoracostomy tubes etc.

 

Review of the approach to traumatised and injured patients

Stabilisation techniques - initial therapy, venous access and analgesia

Review of current thinking on head trauma patients and the prevention of secondary brain injury

 

 


 

Module Three:     Nursing the Respiratory Patient

Nursing the dyspnoeic patient can often be very difficult with patients requiring careful nursing to avoid their deterioration. This course looks at dealing with these patients effectively in order to achieve a positive outcome. We will look at preparing for and dealing with the emergency respiratory patient. It will also look at when and how to intervene, and the equipment we are likely to require.

 

Methods of administering oxygen

Placement and maintenance of thoracostomy tubes

Nursing care of respiratory disease patients including, treatment and nursing care of surgical and medical cases will be discussed using case studies

 

 


 

Module Four:     Nursing the Seizuring Patient

Nursing seizuring patients can be a very stressful experience. This course will review the causes of seizures, seizure types, diagnostics and current treatments including medical and surgical treatments. The lecture will also discuss nursing considerations and will allow you to gain more confidence when dealing with the seizuring patient.

Use of constant rate infusions

Monitoring the seizuring patient

 

 


 

Module Five:     SIRS, Sepsis and (hopefully) Beyond!

Sepsis and SIRS are becoming increasingly recognized in emergency and critically ill patients and these cases are often complex and difficult to treat. These patients will require intensive nursing care in order to achieve a successful outcome. This course will look at fluid therapy techniques in order to achieve and maintain appropriate perfusion, monitoring techniques, commonly administered drugs and procedures carried out during the treatment of these patients.

 

Identification and assessment of the septic patient

Intravascular volume and perfusion support, including use of colloid fluids and vasoactive

agents

Monitoring and anaesthesia of the critically ill septic patient
