Penny graduated from Cambridge in 1989 and spent 4 years in mixed practice in North Wales and East Anglia, before returning to Cambridge to take a medicine residency. She is now a senior lecturer in small animal medicine at Cambridge and helps to run the busy referral and teaching hospital and residency training programme. She has both RCVS and European Diplomas in small animal medicine and is interested in all areas of internal medicine, but particularly gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition. She completed a clinical doctorate on chronic pancreatitis in dogs in 2009 and has published many papers on canine pancreas and liver disease. She is also currently Chairperson of the BSAVA Publications committee and co-editor of a new manual of supportive care for small animals with a variety of diseases.
